As a result, power systems worldwide—from power plants and transmission networks to factories and home outlets—were built around AC. However, the situation has changed with the explosive growth of AI data centers. Smartphones, computers, LEDs, batteries, solar power, and AI semiconductors all operate on direct current. Yet, since the electricity supplied from the outside is AC, the power must be converted multiple times within the data center, a process that generates significant power and heat. To address this issue, NVIDIA proposed a plan to switch the power supply method for next-generation AI data centers to 800-volt DC. And on July 2nd, LS Electric launched the world's first DC Factory in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province, which operates the entire facility using 100% DC. The company stated that it resolved the long-standing weaknesses of DC by utilizing semiconductor transformers and circuit breakers, and improved the factory's energy efficiency by more than 10% by connecting solar power and energy storage systems to DC. Not only LS Electric, but also KEPCO, LS Cable & System, Hyosung Heavy Industries, HD Hyundai Electric, LG Electronics, and the Korea Institute of Energy Research are all stepping up to build a DC industry ecosystem. However, the record of being the "world's first" does not immediately mean dominating the global market. Global power companies in the U.S. and Europe have already entered the DC data center market, and the real battle is likely to begin around 2027, when NVIDIA's next-generation servers are fully deployed.
