인터넷 99%가 지나는 바다 밑… 유럽 100년 독점에 한국이 벌인 일
Most of the world's internet data travels not via satellites, but through submarine cables beneath the ocean. This video, photos transmitted from overseas, and financial records from banks are all moving along a submarine cable network that spans more than 37 times the circumference of the Earth. In particular, the market for ultra-high voltage submarine power cables, which transmit electricity over hundreds of kilometers, has been dominated for about 100 years by European companies such as Italy's Prysmian, France's Nexans, and Denmark's NKT. In 2009, Korea established its first submarine cable factory and took on the challenge of the Jindo-Jeju project, but due to trial and error, it even recorded its first-ever operating loss. However, they did not give up. LS Cable & System built a track record in Denmark and the United States and erected a 172-meter-tall vertical production tower in the East Sea. By even acquiring a cable construction company, they established a turnkey system that takes responsibility for design, production, transportation, and construction. In 2028, the world's largest cable laying vessel, capable of carrying 13,000 tons of cable, is also scheduled to be deployed. As Taihan Cable built a submarine cable factory in Dangjin and secured a cable laying vessel equipped with real-world experience, competition between the two companies has begun within Korea. With demand for submarine cables surging due to AI data centers, offshore wind power, and inter-country power grid connections, the total orders secured by the two companies have exceeded 11 trillion won. However, submarine cables are not merely industrial facilities. Following a series of cable damage incidents in the Baltic Sea and around Taiwan, NATO has even launched operations to protect underwater infrastructure, mobilizing warships and patrol aircraft. Submarine cables have become the arteries of the global economy and national security facilities. How did Korea enter the underwater market that Europe has dominated for 100 years? And why are the super-large cable laying vessels produced by Korea valued as strategic assets rather than just industrial equipment? We will examine this in detail from the beginning in this video. Subscribing and liking this video will greatly help in producing the next video. Please leave your thoughts in the comments as well.
