And far out beyond them both, tracing a circle so wide it takes over half a million years to close, one small cool red ember called Proxima Centauri, the nearest star to the Sun. Proxima is about a seventh the width of our Sun and gives off less than a five hundredth of its light, which is why, at just four and a quarter light years away, you cannot see it with your own eyes. We sit with it a while. We visit the world that circles it, Proxima b, where a year lasts eleven days and one face may be held in permanent daylight while the other rests in permanent night, with a ring of endless twilight in between. We look up from that twilight ring and find our own Sun hanging there as a modest evening star. Then we let the distance settle in slowly: forty trillion kilometres, four and a quarter years at the speed of light, and something over seventy thousand years at the pace of the fastest thing we have ever launched. Close enough to be our neighbour. Far enough to keep its quiet. Mixed to stay soft all night, with no sudden sounds and no interruptions in the middle, so nothing pulls you back awake.
