Why We've Never Photographed the Solar System From Above

Solar system from above: the one view we have almost never had. Deep space, for sleep. Tonight we drift slowly straight up, out of the flat sheet the planets share, to look down on our own Sun and its family from a direction almost nothing has ever travelled. No mid-video interruptions, mixed to stay quiet all night, so nothing jars you awake. This is a long, calm deep space documentary made for sleep. We begin with a gentle idea: every spacecraft is born drifting sideways, trapped in the thin disc of the ecliptic. Then we follow the only two probes that ever truly climbed out of it, Ulysses over the Sun's poles and Solar Orbiter tilting up to photograph those poles for the first time. We drift past the Voyagers, out past the edge of the Sun's wind, and we linger on the strange truth that the only portrait we have of the whole Solar System, the Pale Blue Dot family photo, was taken edge-on, from within the plane. The top-down picture still does not exist. It closes on the quiet, elegant path a future mission could take to finally look down on us all.
