【愛知・豊橋】神秘の山 ✨ 石巻山　Mysterious Mt. ISHIMAKI (TOYOHASHI AICHI)

Introducing recommended spots in Toyohashi City, Aichi, Japan. This time we visited “Ishimaki Jinja Shrine” and “Mt. Ishimaki”. As for "Ishimaki Jinja Shrine", we visited "Yamagami-sha" on the halfway up of the mountain, and shrines in the town: "Subordinate Shrine", "the 1st Torii Gate" and "Sato-miya". As for "Mt. Ishimaki" mainly stopped at a mysterious places in the mountain, and then aimed at the top. The year of establishment of "Ishimaki Jinja Shrine" is unknown. It is said to be around the time of "Emperor Koan" (BC) and around the time of "Empress Suiko" (Asuka period). There is also a theory that "Prince Shotoku" founded the shrine. The oldest document written about the shrine is from 851, so it was already there about 1200 years ago. It seems that there is also a relationship with "Omiwa Jinja Shrine" (Nara Prefecture). It is the only shrine which listed on "Engishiki (= a register of shrines in Japan)" in Toyohashi-city. The main rituals are the "Kudagayu Ritual" held in February at "Yamagami-sha" and the "Oni Matsuri Festival" held at "Sato-miya" in April. The enshrined deity is "Onamuchi no Mikoto" in both "Yamagami-sha" and "Sato-miya". "Mt. Ishimaki" is a mountain with an altitude of 358m. Although it is low, there are steep rocky areas and chains near the summit, so you can experience full-scale mountain climbing in a short time. A 360-degree view opens from the top of the mountain, and it is a scenic spot where you can overlook Toyohashi-city. If the weather and luck are good, you can also see Mt. Fuji between the mountains in the opposite direction of Toyohashi-city. It is also a treasure trove of nature. Valuable plants grow on the limestone near the summit, and it has been designated as a national natural treasure as the "Mt. Ishimaki Limestone Plant Community". Furthermore, there is also a side where you can feel tradition and faith. It goes without saying that "Ishimaki Jinja Shrine" is enshrined, but it is also dotted with places where folk tales and legends that have been handed down since ancient times, a sacred mountain where ascetics practice, a place of rock worship and ancient rituals.
