But food itself cannot defile him, because nothing is unclean after the incarnation of the Lord. Let us be careful, however, about the way we eat. There are several ways of passionate manifestation of this act of eating. The first passionate way is the speed with which we eat, that is, when we eat very quickly. The second way is the quantity, that is, when we eat a lot, beyond satiety. There is an excess there that exceeds the need. The third way is when we select foods. We like only certain foods and we always choose those that we like and we indulgently refuse those who gladly serve us something on the grounds that we do not like it. And we can end up hurting those who serve us. The fourth way is when we eat very slowly, savoring and extracting every pleasure that good taste gives us. “Do not rejoice that the demons are subject to you in My name, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” So we, if we leap for joy for the help that has come to the body in the name of God, what will we say about the perfect cleansing of all passions that will be given to our soul in His name? How many voices, tongues, mouths, hearts and thoughts will be able to give Him due glory? If we rejoice in deliverance from a bodily illness, how will we rejoice when we are delivered from all passions? We do not realize how limited we are by passions.
