The Rarest Wood in the United States | Episode 2 Back for Episode 2 of the series exploring some of the rarest and most unique woods found in the United States. In this video, I turn a remarkable piece of American chestnut on the lathe—a wood species with a legendary history and one that has become incredibly rare in the United States. Once one of the most important hardwood trees in America, the American chestnut was nearly wiped out by chestnut blight in the early 1900s, making surviving wood from these trees both uncommon and highly sought after today. From the first cuts, this piece revealed beautiful grain, warm natural color, and incredible character hidden beneath the surface. Turning a piece of American chestnut isn’t just woodworking—it’s working with a small piece of American history. If you enjoy rare woods, woodturning, and discovering the beauty hidden inside historic timber, you’re in the right place. 🪵 In this video: Turning rare American chestnut on the lathe Revealing stunning grain and natural character Shaping and finishing a handcrafted piece Exploring one of America’s most historic wood species 👍 If you enjoyed Episode 2, consider liking the video and subscribing to Mayflower Woodcraft for more woodturning, rare wood projects, burl bowls, and handcrafted creations. #woodturning #americanchestnut #rarewood #woodworking #woodturningart #woodlathe #woodcraft #handmade #woodworkers #maker #wooddesign #woodart #naturalwood #finewoodworking #diywoodworking #artisan #customwood #historicwood #woodprojects #americanhardwood
