From Schematic to Layout – Bass Pre Engineered Edition 3

In this episode of the Bass Pre Engineered Edition series, we take the next major step in the build: turning the schematic into a clean, intentional, and fully buildable layout. This is where everything starts to become real. A schematic might define the circuit, but the layout determines how well it actually performs. Noise, stability, serviceability, and overall build quality are all shaped by the physical design choices made at this stage. In this video, I walk through the complete layout process for the bass preamp — from signal flow and control placement to circuit card design, lead dress, grounding strategy, and mechanical integration. A major focus of this build is the philosophy of “Air Is Fair” — giving components the space they need to keep the layout readable, serviceable, and electrically stable, without creating unnecessary wire length in sensitive areas. We also cover: • Why layout matters just as much as the schematic • Translating signal flow into a physical design • Front panel layout and control spacing decisions • Circuit card design and eyelet spacing • Lead dress priorities (what actually matters) • A structured wire color system for clarity and troubleshooting • Grounding strategy using a bus bar and single chassis reference • Heater wiring and mechanical layout with horizontal tube mounting • Key layout decisions for the cathode follower and output section • Transformer placement considerations and tradeoffs This episode is less about rules and more about thinking through the design. The goal is a layout that is not just functional, but clean, intentional, and easy to understand both electrically and visually. If you’ve ever wondered why two amps with the same schematic can behave completely differently, this is where that difference begins. ⸻ ⏱️ Chapters 00:00 Intro 00:16 Safety Warning 00:26 In This Episode 01:04 Control Flow 01:43 Player vs Service Position 02:21 Circuit Card Flow 05:18 Front Panel Defines Layout, Layout Defines Front Panel 06:58 Wire Layout 08:07 Air Is Fair 09:17 Preamps Not Pedals 10:43 Minimize The Right Things 11:48 Card Layout 13:51 Wiring Strategy 14:45 Horizontal Tubes 20:12 Colour Code 24:05 Grounding 25:03 I Don't Like Tag Strips 25:58 Best Guess 27:31 Summary 28:27 Outro ⸻ 🔧 Related Topics: tube amp layout, guitar preamp design, bass preamp build, lead dress, grounding in tube amps, cathode follower design, eyelet board layout, DIY tube amplifier, signal flow, amp wiring best practices ⸻ Please like and subscribe, share the video, push that play button, and enjoy!
