The Dreaded Triumph Crankshaft End Float!
We measured the end float in our Triumph Spitfire and found that it was just out of spec. Since this is a simple repair, and since we had the engine out for work on the gearbox anyway, it seemed like a good time to replace the half thrust washers that maintain that tolerance. This is a very common problem on a lot of Triumph's engines, including all Spitfires, the TR6, GT6, and a few others. In fact, you should check the end float on these cars before you purchase one... since a failure of the thrust washers can cause damage to the block and crank shaft that isn't easily repaired (if it's possible at all).
