The Tragic Truth Behind Dad’s Army’s Corporal Jones

For decades, audiences laughed at Lance Corporal Jack Jones — the doddery old butcher of Walmington-on-Sea, with his rambling tales of the Sudan, his catchphrase "Don't panic!", and the row of campaign medals stitched onto his uniform. The medals were invented. The stories were invented. The whole gentle, harmless old soldier was invented. But the man wearing those costume medals was not invented at all. His name was Clive Dunn — and his real war was darker, stranger, and braver than anything the writers of Dad's Army ever dared to put on screen. He was bombed on a cricket pitch in training. He carried wounded men through the wreckage of Greece. He walked three weeks through enemy-occupied mountains. He looked down the barrel of a German rifle at twenty-one years old. He spent four years behind the wire, performing comedy sketches in freezing huts to keep his fellow prisoners alive. He translated a "one-in-three" death threat to his own friends. He climbed into a smoking bomb crater to save the life of an enemy guard. And then he came home, picked up his acting career where the war had left it, and became one of the best-loved comedy actors in British television history. This is the true story of Clive Dunn — Corporal Jones — and the war he survived but rarely spoke about. 📋 CHAPTERS 0:00 The Medals That Lied 1:30 The Boy from Brixton 2:53 The Worst Recruit in Britain 4:44 Churchill's Worst Shot 6:43 The Road to Greece 8:41 Three Weeks in the Mountains 11:54 Four Years Behind the Wire 13:15 The Interpreter 15:22 The Stage Behind the Wire 17:57 The Bombing 20:12 The Long Walk Home 22:15 The Man Who Played Old 25:07 Grandad, and the Quiet Rebel 26:32 Permission to Speak 🎬 ABOUT THIS DOCUMENTARY Cinema Peek tells the true stories behind the faces you thought you knew — the classic actors of British and Hollywood cinema, and the wartime service histories that shaped their generation. ═══════════════════════════════ 🎬 MORE FROM CINEMA PEEK: ▶ Dad's Army – The Real War Stories Behind the Comedy    • Dad's Army – The Real War Stories Behind t...   ▶ Are You Being Served? — The Real Wartime Service Behind Captain Peacock:    • The Real Wartime Service Behind Are You Be...   ▶ Steptoe and Son — The Tragic Truth Behind Britain's Greatest Comedy Duo:    • The Tragic Truth Behind Steptoe and Son — ...   ▶ Love Thy Neighbour — The Show They Cannot Show Today:    • The ITV Sitcom Britain Tried to Forget — A...   ▶ It Ain't Half Hot Mum — The Forgotten Story Behind Britain's Most Banned Sitcom:    • The Real Soldiers Behind It Ain't Half Hot...   ▶ Last of the Summer Wine — The Real War Stories:    • The Real Wartime Service Behind the Cast o...   ═══════════════════════════════ 🔔 SUBSCRIBE for more documentaries: [channel link] 📜 SOURCES Clive Dunn, "Permission to Speak" (autobiography, 1986) Dave Homewood research archive Imperial War Museum, object 1030015325 ("Roll On Parade" programme, signed Bob Dunn, Stalag XVIIIA) British Film Institute, Dad's Army production records Stalag XVIIIA prisoner archives, Wolfsberg #DadsArmy #CorporalJones #CliveDunn #BritishComedy #WW2
