Dad's Army Then and Now 2026 | Who’s Still Alive After 58 Years?
It has been fifty-eight years since the British sitcom Dad's Army first premiered on the British Broadcasting Corporation network in July 1968, cementing itself as an enduring comedy in the history of the United Kingdom. Created by Jimmy Perry and David Croft, the programme followed the exploits of a Home Guard platoon during the Second World War. Set at the exact location of the fictional town of Walmington-on-Sea, and filmed around Thetford in Norfolk, England, the show captured the hearts of millions. As we look back from June 2026, there are now no surviving principal cast members left alive. The final surviving member of the main platoon was Ian Lavender, who played the youngest volunteer, Private Frank Pike. Universally remembered for wearing his signature scarf, Ian Lavender passed away in February 2024 at the age of seventy-seven, marking the definitive end of an era. Prior to his departure, the last surviving member of the wider regular cast was Frank Williams, who played the vicar, Reverend Timothy Farthing. Frank Williams passed away in June 2022 at the age of ninety. The core leadership of the platoon departed decades ago. Arthur Lowe, who played the platoon leader Captain George Mainwaring, passed away in April 1982 at sixty-six. His elegant on-screen foil, John Le Mesurier, who played Sergeant Arthur Wilson, left us in November 1983 at seventy-one. The oldest member of the platoon, Lance Corporal Jack Jones, was played by Clive Dunn, famous for his catchphrase warning people not to panic. Clive Dunn passed away in November 2012 at the age of ninety-two. Other beloved members have also passed away. John Laurie, who portrayed the Scottish undertaker Private James Frazer, passed away in September 1980 at eighty-three. James Beck, who played black market spiv Private Joe Walker, died in November 1973 at forty-four. The gentle orderly Private Charles Godfrey, played by Arnold Ridley, passed away in March 1984 at eighty-eight. Their chief rival, the Air Raid Precautions warden William Hodges, was played by Bill Pertwee, who left us in May 2013 at eighty-six.
