Edwin Starr was so good at Ric-Tic Records that Berry Gordy purchased the entire label just to own him. The Funk Brothers — Motown's own house band — were secretly moonlighting on rival sessions across town, playing on records that competed directly with Hitsville's output. Freda Payne recorded "Band of Gold" with a producer who couldn't even put his own name on it because Gordy's lawyers were watching — and it still hit number three pop and number one in the UK. And Dennis Coffey, the session guitarist who played on everyone else's records for a decade, finally made one of his own — and it went to number one R&B.
