No One Believed These Jim Brown Stories! Until They Watched This! Jim Brown walked away from football at 30 — the greatest player alive — and never looked back. This is his full story. Born on St. Simons Island, Georgia in 1936, Jim Brown was raised by his great-grandmother in the segregated South before being sent north to Manhasset, Long Island. He earned 13 varsity letters in high school, turned down the New York Yankees, and arrived at Syracuse University on money raised door-to-door by a local attorney — because Syracuse would not offer him a scholarship. What followed was the most dominant career in NFL history. 12,312 rushing yards. 106 rushing touchdowns. Nine Pro Bowls in nine seasons. Three MVP awards. 118 games without missing a single one. He remains the only player in league history to average over 100 rushing yards per game across an entire career. Then, in the summer of 1966, while filming The Dirty Dozen in England, Browns owner Art Modell publicly threatened to suspend and fine him. Jim Brown sat down in a hotel room, typed a letter, and retired on the spot. He was 30 years old. He became Hollywood's first black action-leading man. The Dirty Dozen grossed over $45 million. 100 Rifles gave him top billing above Raquel Welch and Burt Reynolds — and one of the first interracial love scenes in major studio history. Off screen, he founded the Black Economic Union to fund black-owned businesses. He organized the historic 1967 Cleveland Summit that stood behind Muhammad Ali. He created the Amer-I-Can program and brought rival gang members into his own home in the Hollywood Hills to broker peace. In 2002, Art Modell admitted on camera that trying to force Jim Brown's hand was the worst decision of his career. 36 years too late. Jim Brown died peacefully on May 18, 2023. He was 87.
