I look directly at Chinese media and see what's being discussed there, instead of letting Western propaganda about China dictate the agenda. Today, this led me to an article about a forum discussing "core values," which must be read in the context of China's nation-building. What exactly is China, Chinese culture? These ideas are relatively new, just like "Western culture" or "Judeo-Christian values." None of these concepts would have been discussed in Europe or China 100 years ago. A concrete example in today's article: a historical story about decency and compromise, about foregoing profit to achieve harmony, served as the impetus for establishing a think tank on mediation and alternative dispute resolution.
