Roll'em Pete - Big Joe Turner & Pete Johnson (1938)
Roll'em Pete (1938) - First released on Vocalion December 30, 1938. Vocalion, Brunswick, and ARC were bought by Columbia. The same song was released at various times under the same title and as "Rebecca". Rebecca was possibly the "gal who lived up on the hill." Both Big Joe Turner and Pete Johnson were born in Kansas City, Missouri. Big Joe Turner became one of the creators of Rock n' Roll singing such tunes as Flip, Flop and Fly and Shake, Rattle, and Roll. Roll'em Pete was immortalized in the opening scene of Spike Lee's Malcolm X and an episode of Ken Burn's Jazz.
