Ancient Tools of the Rainbow River | Dunnellon History

This video explores the deep indigenous history of the Rainbow River in Dunnellon, Florida. Using actual artifacts and tools from the region, we look at how different stone points and tools help identify the time periods when Native peoples lived along the river. The discussion follows several major eras. The earliest is the Paleo period, beginning more than 12,000 years ago, when the first inhabitants hunted Ice Age animals such as mammoths and mastodons using large spear points. These early points were attached directly to spears and represent some of the finest stone craftsmanship found in North America. The Archaic period followed and lasted thousands of years. During this time stemmed spear points became common and the atlatl was widely used to throw spears. Many of the stone points found across Florida today come from this long era of tool development and adaptation. Later periods include the Woodland and Mississippian eras when the bow and arrow appeared and smaller points became common. Pottery, bone tools, pendants, and other artifacts also began appearing in greater numbers. Some items found along the Rainbow River show evidence of trade with distant regions, including stone types from areas as far away as the Appalachian Mountains. The video also explains how the Rainbow River itself was very different thousands of years ago. During the Paleo era sea levels were far lower than today. The Withlacoochee River did not yet flow as it does today, and the Rainbow River system would have extended much farther toward the Gulf of Mexico. One location discussed is Alice Spring near the confluence of the rivers. Historical accounts suggest it was once one of the largest springs in the system before dredging, phosphate mining, and the construction of the Inglis Dam altered the natural water flow.
