This picturesque pass serves as a vital connection between the upper valley of the Inn River and the Lech Valley, offering a significantly shorter route compared to the alternative Fern Pass or the Flexen Pass over the Arlberg. The road traversing the Hahntennjoch, designated as L266, stretches approximately 29 kilometers (18 miles) from Imst to Elmen. Known for its challenging and scenic characteristics, the road is particularly popular among motorcyclists and cyclists due to its winding nature and steep gradients, which can reach up to 18.9 percent. Due to these demanding conditions and its susceptibility to natural hazards, the Hahntennjoch road is generally closed to traffic over 14 metric tons and is typically impassable from November to April. The pass is notably prone to avalanches, falling rocks, and mudslides. To enhance safety and manage these risks, an automatic system was installed in 2004 that triggers a road closure in the event of an obstruction or imminent danger.
