It reaches an elevation of 1613 metres (5292 ft), though some sources state 1618 metres. The pass connects Cluses in the Arve valley to Le Grand-Bornand in the Borne valley and is situated between the Massif des Bornes to the northwest and the Chaîne des Aravis to the southeast. The road traversing the pass is designated as the D4. Part of the scenic Route des Grandes Alpes, the Col de la Colombière is a popular route for tourists, cyclists, and hikers. However, it is not a major traffic route due to the availability of parallel, more direct roads such as the A40 autoroute. The pass is generally closed during the winter months, typically from November to May or June, due to snowfall. At the summit, visitors can find a restaurant and souvenir shops, and the area serves as a starting point for various hikes, offering opportunities to observe local wildlife, including ibex and marmots. The pass also provides access to climbing spots. The Col de la Colombière is particularly renowned for its role in road cycling, frequently featuring as a challenging ascent in the Tour de France. It was first included in the prestigious race in 1960 and has since appeared over 20 times, often classified as a category 1 or hors catégorie climb due to its difficulty. The ascent can be approached from two main directions. From Scionzier on the northern side, the climb is approximately 16.3 kilometres long, with an average gradient of 6.8% and a maximum gradient reaching around 10.2% near the summit, covering an elevation gain of 1108 metres. An even more challenging variant from this side includes the Col de Romme before reaching Le Reposoir and then continuing to the Col de la Colombière. The southern ascent from Le Grand-Bornand is shorter, around 11.7 kilometres, with an average gradient of 5.9% and a maximum of 9%, for an elevation gain of 690 metres. The final kilometres on both sides are particularly steep. Recorded in 4K HDR, with binaural audio. #ColDeLaColombière #DrivingTour #ScenicDrive #Roadtrip #Drive #SplendidScenery
