In this new series I’m trying to answer a simple question: are any stouts actually better than Guinness? To find out, I’m building a leaderboard that scores every nitro stout I can get my hands on. In this first episode we establish the baseline with Guinness Draught and Guinness Nitrosurge, before adding two challengers to the board: Aldi Mulligan’s Irish Stout and Murphy’s Irish Stout. Each beer will be judged on taste, texture, value and overall drinkability to see how close they come to dethroning the king of nitro stout. This is Episode 1 of the Guinness Alternative Index — and the leaderboard officially begins here.
