Project Overview: Prayagraj Chheoki – Vindhyachal Rail Tripling The Prayagraj Chheoki (PCOI) to Vindhyachal (BDL) 3rd Line Project is a strategic infrastructure initiative aimed at de-congesting one of the busiest segments of the Howrah–Delhi main line. By expanding the existing double-line section into a triple-track corridor, this project serves as a vital link for both high-speed passenger traffic and heavy freight movement across Northern India. 1. Strategic Objectives Capacity Augmentation: Drastically reducing the "line capacity utilization" which currently exceeds 150% on peak days. Punctuality Improvement: Minimizing the "waiting period" for mail and express trains by providing a dedicated path for slow-moving freight and coal rakes. Spiritual Connectivity: Enhancing the travel experience for millions of pilgrims visiting the Vindhyachal Shakti Peeth and the Prayagraj Sangam. 2. Technical Scope The project involves comprehensive engineering and construction work across the rugged terrain of the Purvanchal region: Track Work: Laying of approximately 80+ km of high-tensile strength rails with heavy-duty concrete sleepers. Structural Engineering: Construction of several major and minor bridges, as well as the expansion of existing Rail-Under-Bridges (RUBs) and Over-Bridges (ROBs). Modern Signaling: Implementation of Electronic Interlocking (EI) and automatic signaling systems to ensure safe, high-frequency train operations. Station Redevelopment: Upgrading yard layouts at intermediate stations to accommodate the third line without disrupting existing traffic. 3. Economic & Social Impact As a key component of the Prime Minister’s Gati Shakti National Master Plan, this project is more than just steel and ballast. It is designed to: Boost Freight Revenue: Facilitate faster transit for coal, cement, and food grains moving toward the eastern ports. Regional Development: Generate local employment during the construction phase and improve the commercial viability of towns between Prayagraj and Mirzapur. Energy Efficiency: Reduced idling time for locomotives leads to lower fuel consumption and a smaller carbon footprint for Indian Railways.
