MARALA: The Most Timeless Classic Superyacht Tour (1931 Masterpiece Restored!)
In this in-depth tour, YachtBuyer takes you on board one of the most extraordinary superyachts on the planet, Marala. Marala was built at the Camper & Nicholson yard in Gosport and hit the water in February 1931. When her original owner died a month before launch, she was taken on by one of the shipyard’s owners, Dr Charles Nicholson, and sold to Charles Fairey (of Fairey Aviation fame), who renamed her Evadne. During the Second World War, Fairey handed Evadne to the Royal Navy, where she underwent conversion for anti-submarine duty and saw convoy service in the Irish Sea and the Atlantic. Unusually for a private yacht, she was fitted with guns and depth charges, and we’ll come on to her wartime accomplishments later in the video. She changed hands multiple times after the war and was bought by American businessman Robert de Balkany, who named her Marala - a combination of his daughter’s names, Marina and Alexandra. He owned her for 53 years and certainly knew how to have a good time, on one occasion, hosting Frank Sinatra for a month-long cruise in the Mediterranean. She came onto the market for the first time in 50 years in 2016, and her new owner was determined to give her a new lease of life while remaining as faithful as possible to the original design. With an LOA of 58.8m, a beam of 8.1m and coming in at just 449 gross tonnes, Marala is compact by today’s standards, but name a charter yacht that can equal her poise and presence. Having recently been through an extensive and faithful refit at the Pendennis Shipyards in Cornwall, she is looking better than ever, a blend of historical wonder and exquisite craftsmanship.
