Reaching an elevation of 1,815 meters (5,955 feet) above sea level, it forms a vital link between the Engadine Valley to the northeast and the Val Bregaglia (Bergell) to the southwest, ultimately connecting Switzerland with Chiavenna in Italy. The pass is notable as it marks the watershed divide between the Danube and Po river basins. Historically, the Maloja Pass has been an important Alpine crossing, serving as a crucial connection even in Roman times, often in conjunction with the Julier Pass. While the higher Septimer Pass once held greater significance, the development of the Maloja Pass for wheeled traffic around 1820 increased its importance. Until the opening of the San Bernardino Pass, it was a primary route between Chur and Milan. The landscape around the Maloja Pass is characterized by a dramatic descent on the southern side towards the Val Bregaglia, featuring numerous hairpin bends. In contrast, the northern side towards the Engadine descends more gradually, passing by Lake Sils (Lej da Segl) and Lake Silvaplana (Lej da Silvaplauna). The pass is generally open year-round, though heavy snowfall can lead to temporary closures. The Maloja Pass is also known for the Maloja Wind, a strong, gusty wind that can affect the area. Today, the pass remains a popular route for motorists and cyclists, offering scenic views and connecting culturally distinct regions of Switzerland and Italy. The Engadine Skimarathon, a major cross-country skiing event in the Alps, commences near the summit of the Maloja Pass each winter.
