Its summit reaches an elevation of 2,284 meters (7,493 feet) above sea level, marking the drainage divide between the Rhine and Danube river basins. The pass lies between the municipalities of Bivio to the west and Silvaplana to the east and is part of the Swiss N29 national road, though it is toll-free. Historically significant, the Julier Pass was heavily utilized during the Roman era, evidenced by numerous archaeological finds including road remnants and coins, making it the location with the most Roman road artifacts in Graubünden. Two prominent soapstone columns, believed to be part of a Roman sanctuary, stand near the modern road's summit. While the pass competed with the Septimer Pass in the Middle Ages, the construction of a wider road between 1820 and 1828 solidified the Julier's importance, particularly for accessing the Engadin valley. In the late 1930s, it became the first Swiss alpine pass to be paved with asphalt. Today, the Julier Pass remains a crucial north-south transit route and a vital link to the popular Engadin region.
