In our Modern Armies series, we discussed Uzbekistan's military power and its transformation under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The Uzbek Armed Forces (O'zbekiston Respublikasi Qurolli Kuchlari, Ўзбекистон Республикаси Қуролли Кучлари) consist of land, air, and air defense forces. With 65,000 soldiers, it is one of the strongest armies in Central Asia (Turkestan). Soviet-legacy T-80, T-72, and T-62 tanks, and BMP-2s remain in the inventory, but the domestically produced To'fon howitzer and Arslon armored vehicle are used for border security. Modernization is accelerating with the acquisition of the Ejder Yalçın, Bayraktar TB2, ANKA, and Aksungur UAVs from Turkey. The army's inventory also includes Oshkosh M-ATVs from the US, HQ-9 systems from China, and Tigr vehicles from Russia. President Mirziyoyev has been modernizing his army and strengthening ties with the Turkic world since 2016. A Military Financial Cooperation Agreement was signed with Turkey in 2020. The Termez 2021 and Eternal Fraternity exercises strengthened cooperation with Turkey, Pakistan, and Azerbaijan. The Eternal Brotherhood 4 exercise is planned for Baku in 2025. Uzbekistan has resolved border disputes with Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan in the Fergana Valley. It has taken measures against ISIS-Khorasan on its border with Afghanistan and is ensuring security on the Amu Darya with its river flotilla. Mirziyoyev's "good neighborly" policy has ended crises that have persisted since 1991.
