Somayeh held her breath. Her tired eyes, which fell on that lush meadow in the heart of the rocky desert, could not believe it for a moment. She stretched her callused hands towards the ears of corn and carefully plucked a few of them and threw them into the skirt of her tent. But her gaze fell on the green bushes that gave off the scent of mint and thyme; her mother had once told her that this plant worked wonders for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. With indescribable gusto, she picked some of it. Suddenly, the sound of stones rustling from behind the hill shot a bolt of terror into her heart. The yellow eyes of a hungry jackal shone among the shadows of the rocks. With a heart pounding with fear, Somayeh reached for a larger stone and screamed with all the strength she had left. She threw the stone hard at the jackal. The animal, shocked by the desperate audacity of this pregnant woman, put its tail between its legs and fled in fear. Cautiously and with hands shaking from fatigue, Somayeh descended the mountain and returned to the same large rock that was her refuge. She lit a small fire from dry bushes. She roasted corn on the fire and brewed medicinal herbs in an old metal cup. The warmth of the food and the aroma of the herbs caressed her frail being. For the first time in days, she tasted hope, and at the same time, a child moved gently inside her belly. Somayeh placed her hand on her belly and stared at the starry sky.
