Somayeh’s hands, blistered from biting the hot stones of the desert, did not tremble for a moment as she wrapped the warm chicken eggs in her old cloth. In the heart of that scorching desert, her hungry stomach growled, but her eyes were fixed on the softness of the eggshells; where in the sunlight, she could see the thin veins of life beating in the shell. She could have caught this chicken for her dinner, she could have broken the eggs and appeased the hunger of the months of shelterlessness for an hour. But she did not. When she turned to the cameraman, dust settled on her torn scarf and sweat dripped from her temple. She carefully presented the chicken to him and said, “These are not mine. These chickens have the right to be born. I have no place to be a shadow for them... I have lost my land. But you can deliver them to someone who has a home.” The bitterness of his words echoed in the dry desert air.
