Trail Run: Taranaki Maunga / Mount Taranaki

Located in Egmont National Park, Taranaki Maunga / Mount Taranaki is a dormant stratovolcano in the Taranaki region on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island. It is around 120,000 years old and last erupted in 1775. At 2,518m, it is the North Island’s second-highest point. This route started at the Taranaki / Egmont National Park Visitor (946m), took the Natural Walk track and up the gravel Translator Road to the privately owned Tahurangi Lodge (1,492m). The track continues upwards via the poled route through the rock-covered Hongi Valley. A series of steps lead out of the valley onto steep scoria (gravel) slopes. Continue uphill to the Lizard (2,134m), a prominent rocky ridge leading to the crater’s summer entrance. The route then crosses the crater ice to the final short climb up to the summit rock.
