Mount Taranaki Summit || Hiking a dormant Stratovolcano
Mount Taranaki is a dormant stratovolcano on the West Coast of New Zealand's North Island with a striking resemblance to Mount Fuji. With a summit at 2508m, its crater contains snow year round, and the easiest time of year to climb it is during summer when its slopes are free from snow and ice. Spotting a weekend with lots of sun and low winds we drove from Whanganui to the small town of Inglewood, where we spent the night before taking on the hike starting before sunrise at six in the morning. It was a surprisingly difficult 10 hour hike, with the scree slopes proving challenging both up and downhill, but well worth it for the sense of achievement!
