Up until now, I've often used ductal carcinoma as an example, but this time I'll be talking about lobular carcinoma. The lobes that make up the mammary gland are made up of ducts (tubes that carry milk) and lobules (which produce milk), and most breast cancers arise from ductal cells. Lobular carcinoma arises from lobular cells. Though both cancers arise from the same mammary gland, they have very different characteristics from ductal carcinoma. Today, I'll be explaining invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC). The defining feature of invasive lobular carcinoma is its tendency to metastasize to unusual places. Membranes (pleura, brain membranes, peritoneum, etc.) Abdominal organs (stomach, colon, ovaries, etc.) Why is this the case? Although much is still unknown in this area, I'll give a brief overview of what research has revealed.
