In this lecture, we will learn how to evaluate patients with thermal burns. Because the burn site is highly visible in patients with thermal burns, attention is often focused on skin damage. However, in the actual field, life-threatening issues can include airway edema, inhalation injury, carbon monoxide poisoning, burn shock, hypothermia, and associated trauma. Therefore, patients with thermal burns must be approached strictly according to the principles of trauma patient evaluation. In other words, airway, respiration, circulation, consciousness, exposure, and warmth must be systematically evaluated before treating the burn site.
