For burn patients, what is important is not simply "how much pain they are in," but rather determining how extensive and deep the injury is and how likely fluid loss and systemic reactions may occur. To this end, it is necessary to assess the body surface area, or TBSA (total body surface area), and to be able to utilize the Rule of 9 and the Hand Rule. Furthermore, in severe burns, increased capillary permeability can cause intravascular fluid to migrate into tissues, potentially leading to hypovolemia and burn shock. Hypothermia, infection, and organ failure resulting from skin barrier damage must also be considered.
