Japanese Kana - Hiragana (平仮名) and Katakana 片仮名 both hold some deep secrets about Chinese Characters (漢字 Hàn zi / Kanji) that might never become apparent to learners of Japanese. Imagine learning to write cursive English before learning to read normal printed letters. That's exactly what happens with learners first dive into Japanese and learn Hiragana and Katakana syllabries. The phonetic characters are based on cursive forms of traditional Chinese characters - the sounds taken from different periods of Ancient / Middle Chinese. To a new learner, the shapes of Hiragana characters and their 'parent' Chinese character may look like they have nothing in common. There is 'magic' in how these printed forms morph into the fluid kana forms that we see - and in understanding how native speakers' eyes and muscles interpret the strokes of these base characters, you will be able to 'feel' and see the characters much more like native speakers experience them.
