Iceland Road Trip Day 3 | Children's Waterfall, Lava Falls, Blue Lava Falls: A Day of Thrilling Snowy Mountain Roads On the third day in Iceland, the original plan was to first visit Children's Waterfall, which we missed the previous day, to make up for the day's absence, and then head to the famous Golden Circle to see all of Iceland's classic attractions in one go. However, things didn't go according to plan. After arriving at Children's Waterfall and Lava Falls and taking photos, it was already close to 1 PM. We originally planned to have lunch at a rest stop in the Golden Circle, but ended up having a quick bite at a rest area next to the Children's Waterfall parking lot, meaning the day's itinerary was starting to extend further. An even bigger challenge was yet to come. Due to the continuous snowfall in Iceland over the previous two days, many mountain roads showed "No Winter Service," meaning there had been no snow removal, salting, or other winter road maintenance. Before setting off, I had specifically researched the route, preferring to take a longer route to avoid these dangerous sections. Unexpectedly, the GPS still led us onto the mountain roads we least wanted to take. At first, I just found it strange that there were almost no cars on the road, and the snow on the road was getting thicker and thicker. Although the scenery along the way was desolate yet magnificent, like a movie scene, I always had an uneasy feeling. That is, until I encountered a 12% uphill and a 14% downhill section. The uphill was relatively easy, but the downhill was what really made me break out in a cold sweat. The entire road was almost entirely covered in snow and ice, and I could only use intermittent braking to keep the ABS engaged, accompanied by a "clattering" sound as I carefully glided down the mountain. Those few minutes were so tense that I couldn't say a word, only hoping the car wouldn't go out of control. Only after safely arriving at the rest stop did I quickly check the information on the section of road I had just traveled, and it was confirmed that we had indeed entered the very mountain road with no winter service that I was most worried about. Knowing the truth, I began to feel a sense of dread. This unexpected incident caused significant delays, and with darkness falling and snow starting to fall, we only managed to reach Brúarfoss (Blue Waterfall) in the Golden Circle before heading straight to our next guesthouse to rest. Although we couldn't complete our planned Golden Circle itinerary, this day became the most unforgettable and thrilling of our entire Iceland trip. Some attractions can be visited later, but arriving safely at our destination is the most important thing for a road trip. Barnafoss (Children's Waterfall) Located in western Iceland, next to the famous lava waterfall, Barnafoss is a popular destination for many people to visit on the same day. The glacial water weaves through narrow lava fissures, creating a rushing torrent, quite different from typical waterfalls cascading from a height. "Barnafoss" means "Children's Waterfall" in Icelandic, derived from a long-standing legend about two children who fell into the river while crossing a natural stone bridge, hence the unfortunate name. The natural stone bridge is long gone, leaving only the rushing river and spectacular canyon terrain, adding to the area's mystique and historical atmosphere. Standing on the viewing platform, you can experience the awe-inspiring power of the glacial water cutting through the rock crevices up close, making it well worth a stop. Hraunfossar Lava Falls Just a few minutes' walk from Children's Waterfall is Iceland's famous lava fall. Unlike typical waterfalls, the water here doesn't cascade from a height, but rather slowly seeps out from fissures in a large layer of lava, eventually flowing into the Hvítá River, forming a waterfall complex approximately 900 meters long. Streams of white water flow from between the black volcanic rocks, creating a unique landscape where blue-green hues intertwine with black lava, a truly representative natural wonder of Iceland. Because of the gentle flow and rich gradations, both close-up and aerial shots offer strikingly different visuals. This is, in my opinion, one of Iceland's most distinctive and highly recommended waterfalls. Brúarfoss, the Blue Waterfall Brúarfoss is known by many travelers as "Iceland's bluest waterfall." The waterfall's most distinctive feature is the dreamy blue-green hue of the glacial meltwater, which becomes even more vibrant under sunlight, hence its nickname "Blue Waterfall." In the past, it required a long walk to reach, thus preserving its secluded atmosphere. Although new parking lots and walking trails have been added in recent years, it remains far less crowded than other popular attractions in the Golden Circle.
