Getting Started with Canvas Data

Making the most out of your Canvas analytics! In a collaborative effort between UAB’s Office of eLearning and Professional Studies and UAB’s Office of Information Technology, UAB has been exploring the use of Canvas data to provide deeper analytics for administrative units. Beginning with the decision to host the data on their internal servers, the UAB team started building reports to tell a deeper story. This project was amplified in March when their campus moved to a fully online semester. Using the reports that were built, UAB was able to gather data on their current active courses and determine the effectiveness of their online transition. Following the Spring 2020 semester, the reports were rebuilt to take an active approach on reporting their daily analytics. Administrative units now get a daily email reporting active courses, percent of courses using native Canvas features, and a custom report showing what Canvas elements an individual course is using.
