Stones River Campaign: Rosecrans Takes Command
Following the failure of Bragg's Invasion of Kentucky. The Confederate Army of Mississippi returned to Tennessee in chaos. Two sides sprang up in the army, one side was with Bragg, and the other was against Bragg. This verbal conflict was so great that the Confederate president himself, Jefferson Davis, was forced to intervene to ensure that the army would not crumble. Meanwhile, in the Federal Army of the Ohio, similar chaos ensued as many prominent officials called for the ousting of Buell, who had failed to command his army effectively during Bragg's invasion of the Bluegrass State. Major General William S. Rosecrans, who won solid victories in Mississippi, was chosen to command in Buell's stead. As both armies face reorganizations, Middle Tennessee beckons for both sides to fill the void. In the last few months of 1862, both Bragg and Rosecrans will pivot their armies, hoping to take or protect the volunteer state's capital, Nashville.
