Ken McNabb: How to Teach Your Ranch Horse to Move Off Leg Pressure

Every good Ranch Horse should respond willingly to leg pressure—whether you're opening a gate or sorting cattle. In this video, we’re starting with a broken-mouthpiece shank bit and bridging the reins. 3 Leg Positions: Position 1: Up by the front cinch – to move the shoulders Position 2: Middle of their belly – to move the ribcage Position 3: Back by the rear cinch – to move the hindquarters The Drill: Walk your horse in a circle. Start with your inside leg in Position 1 and ask the shoulder to step out a few steps. Then move to Position 2 to push the ribcage out. Finally, use Position 3 to move the hindquarters around while the front feet slow down. Tip: If your horse doesn’t respond right away, don’t worry. Keep your leg on and pick up your outside rein a little to stop the forward motion. The goal is to get your horse comfortable moving away from leg pressure so you can place them wherever you want!
