Ken McNabb Horse Training Tips: Understanding Leads and How to Cue Correctly
Start with the basics—learn how to identify which lead your horse is on and how to cue correctly for a balanced, confident lope. Key Takeaways: The "Lope" and "Canter" are the same movement. Correct lead comes from the inside hind leg pushing off. To check your lead: Inside leg in front of the cinch, outside leg back. How to Cue Your Horse: Sit square in the saddle (no leaning!). Bump with inside leg to guide shoulders out. Use outside leg to step the hip inside. Keep your inside shoulder up. Both legs on, give a little kiss, and lope off! Tips: If a lead is tougher, switch back and forth until it's smoother. Don't stay on the harder lead too long! Practice at least 3 times a week for 20 minutes each time. Consistency is essential to developing a confident horse with a smooth, pretty lope! Until Next Time, May God Bless the Trails You Ride ~ Ken McNabb kenmcnabb.com dmhorses.com
