O Rei do Café que Gastou uma Fortuna para Ensinar o Mundo a Voar e Morreu Esquecido - Santos Dumont
In Petrópolis, on a slope of Rua do Encanto, there's a chalet so small it looks like a dollhouse. It has a staircase that only works if you step with your right foot first. It has a hot water shower that no one else in Brazil had at that time. It has a suspended table that folds from the wall. It has a bed positioned so that the first thing he would see upon waking would be the sky through the window. The house was entirely designed by Alberto Santos Dumont. He called it A Encantada (The Enchanted One). It was the refuge of the man who had made the whole world look up. In 1906, Santos Dumont flew the 14-Bis in Paris and proved that a heavier-than-air machine could take off without a catapult, without a track, without any external impulse. The world saw. France applauded. Brazil celebrated from afar. When he returned to Brazil, Santos Dumont expected recognition. He received superficial tributes and little else. The government never financed his projects as France did. He never built a research center bearing his name while he was alive. The genius who gave Brazil the right to claim the invention of the airplane spent the last years of his life in Petrópolis and later in Guarujá, increasingly isolated, ill, and tormented by a consuming guilt: airplanes were being used to bomb cities. In 1932, during the Constitutionalist Revolution, Santos Dumont saw Brazilian government planes bombing São Paulo. The man who invented flight to liberate humanity watched his creation killing Brazilians. He died that same year, alone in a hotel room in Guarujá. This video reconstructs Santos Dumont's life inside the Enchanted House in Petrópolis—every domestic invention, every ingenious detail of that chalet, the daily life of the most brilliant man Brazil has ever produced—and tells what happened when the world he invented turned against everything he believed in. The house still stands. The man who built it died believing he had destroyed the world. This is the B-side of the father of aviation that Brazil let die alone.
