In 1700, a large house in colonial Brazil was not what paintings depict. It wasn't the elegant two-story house with a flowered veranda that books illustrate. It was a block of thick adobe or stone walls, without plumbing, without glass in the windows, without any of the comfort that the word "large" suggests. Water didn't arrive by pipe. It arrived on the heads of enslaved women who went up and down the river slope several times a day, carrying twenty-liter clay pots balanced on their skulls. Each bath for the master cost ten trips. Each pot of food cost another five. Water was the most invisible luxury in the colony—and the body that carried it was even more invisible. Food was prepared on a wood-burning stove on the floor of a room without a chimney, by enslaved women who breathed smoke all day and slept in the same room where they cooked. The master ate upstairs. Whoever prepared the food ate what was left over, if there was anything left. The night was total darkness. A whale oil lamp illuminated thirty centimeters around the house and plunged it into darkness. The smell of burnt oil permeated everything. The sounds of the night were the crackling of the wick, footsteps on the wooden floor, and what happened in the back rooms that no one recorded in any document. For the master, the big house was property. For the mistress, it was a cloister—women of the colonial elite rarely left, living between the bedroom, the living room, and the chapel. For the enslaved, it was a prison without bars: the door was open, but escape meant dense woods, overseers with dogs, and punishment that served as an example for those who remained.
