We Ended Up in a Dutch Prison... (Not What You Think)

We spent the day exploring a Dutch city most people have never heard of… and somehow ended up in a prison. Kind of. Welcome to Leeuwarden, the capital of the Dutch province of Friesland that completely surprised us. We started with Leeuwarden's very own "leaning" tower, the Oldehove, and quickly realized this was going to be a fun day! From tiny hidden “mini people” scattered around the city (yes, Katrina went hunting for ALL of them), to unexpectedly good local food, to an alleyway filled with hundreds of used books, this city has a lot to discover. Of course, we had to try some Frisian specialties like the oranjekoek, the iconic pink cake that looks like tompouce (but tastes like almonds), and suikerbrood (sugar bread) that is a must-try whenever you're in Friesland! We visited the Blokhuispoort, a former prison that’s now filled with cafés, shops, and creative spaces. It’s one of those places that perfectly sums up the Netherlands: practical, a little weird, and somehow really cool. To balance things out, we also stopped by the Fries Museum to get a better sense of the region’s history and culture because Friesland definitely feels like its own world. We have visited Friesland a few times in the past but are always looking for new excuses to come back to this province and bring home a loaf of suikerbrood.
