Although a compromise proposal was presented to separate the location of the merged university headquarters, the medical school, and the university hospital, the positions of the two universities remain at odds. [Report] Discussions regarding the merger of Mokpo National University and Suncheon National University, the two national universities representing the eastern and western regions of Jeonnam, have once again reached a crossroads. Although they had agreed to merge with the goal of establishing the region's first medical school in 2024, they have failed to narrow their differences regarding the location of the core facilities: the medical school and the university hospital. The Jeonnam-Gwangju-Daejeon Transition Planning Committee recently proposed a compromise plan to locate the integrated university headquarters and medical school in Mokpo, while establishing a 500-bed university hospital in Suncheon first. The plan envisions subsequently establishing an additional university hospital in Mokpo by acquiring or expanding existing medical facilities. Mokpo University unconditionally accepted this proposal, stating that it cannot afford to miss the "golden time" for establishing a medical school in Jeonnam. On the other hand, Suncheon University decided not to accept the proposal after gathering opinions from its constituents, including professors, students, and staff. The argument is that under the compromise plan, the university headquarters, medical school, and university hospital would all be located in Mokpo, while Suncheon would be left with only a hospital and a campus, without a medical school. Suncheon University requested an alternative plan to locate the integrated university headquarters and medical school in Suncheon, while establishing university hospitals in the eastern and western regions in stages. In response, the committee stated that it would respect the outcome if the two universities reach an agreement through autonomous consultation. However, a condition was attached to the joint agreement reached through voluntary consultation that it must include a schedule for submitting an application for university merger to the Ministry of Education in July. It was stated that if a joint agreement is not reached between the two universities, the mediation proposal will be deemed unaccepted, and the role of mediation will be recommended to be terminated. With the positions of both sides remaining at a standstill, local conflict surrounding the establishment of a national medical school in Jeonnam is deepening once again.
