Prosecutor provides update on Vinton County child endangerment case
Vinton County prosecutor William Archer held a press conference Wednesday (July 8) to provide updates on the ongoing child endangerment case involving 16 children discovered living in deplorable conditions. Key points from the update include: Prosecution Team: Archer confirmed that while the cases remain under Vinton County's jurisdiction, two special prosecutors were appointed to assist: Kara Keating from the Ohio Attorney General's office and Anneka Collins, a Highland County prosecuting attorney. These appointments come at no cost to Vinton County, Archer said. Bond Status for Gary Siders Sr.: Archer said that Siders Sr. was granted a recognizance bond following a medical emergency. After a fall during transport, Archer said medical evaluations determined he requires specialized, expensive care outside the county. The prosecutor explained that releasing him on bond prevents the county from bearing the high cost of his medical treatment, which could potentially bankrupt the county. Competency Motion: The defense has filed motions to have Siders Sr. assessed for competency, questioning his ability to proceed with the prosecution. Investigation Status: The prosecutor emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and declined to comment on specific factual details, such as the children's conditions or the existence of birth certificates, citing the need for fairness to victims and defendants. He clarified that no federal agencies are involved to his knowledge.
