The Holy Rosary: Sorrowful Mysteries – Friday, July 10, 2026 | Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Today we pray the Holy Rosary with the Sorrowful Mysteries for Friday of the Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time. In the First Reading, the book of Hosea closes not with condemnation but with one of the most tender invitations in all of Scripture — God calling a wayward people back: "Return, O Israel, to the LORD, your God; you have collapsed through your guilt. Take with you words, and return to the LORD; say to him, 'Forgive all iniquity'" (Hosea 14:2–10). And God answers the return before it is even complete: "I will heal their defection, I will love them freely; for my wrath is turned away from them. I will be like the dew for Israel: he shall blossom like the lily."In the Gospel, Jesus prepares his apostles for what lies ahead — not comfort but persecution. They will be handed over to courts, scourged, led before governors, betrayed by family. And yet in the middle of every warning comes the most steadying promise: "When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say. You will be given at that moment what you are to say. For it will not be you who speak but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you" (Matthew 10:16–23). The Sorrowful Mysteries walk us into the suffering Christ endured without opening his mouth to defend himself — because he trusted completely in the Father who sent him.These readings belong together in the most beautiful way: Hosea ends with God offering to heal what we have broken, and Jesus promises that the same Spirit who raised him from the dead will speak through us in our most vulnerable moments. The cross is not the end of the story — it is the place where healing begins and where the Spirit is given.
