The Holy Rosary: Luminous Mysteries – Thursday, July 9, 2026 | Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Today we pray the Holy Rosary with the Luminous Mysteries for Thursday of the Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time. In the First Reading, God speaks through Hosea one of the most breathtaking passages in all of Scripture — a father remembering the childhood of a son who keeps walking away: "When Israel was a child I loved him, out of Egypt I called my son. Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk, who took them in my arms... I fostered them like one who raises an infant to his cheeks" (Hosea 11:1–4, 8–9). And when every reason for anger is justified, God says: "My heart is overwhelmed, my pity is stirred. I will not give vent to my blazing anger... for I am God and not man." In the Gospel, Jesus sends his apostles out with nothing — no gold, no silver, no extra tunic, no walking stick — only a word and a mission: "The Kingdom of heaven is at hand. Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, drive out demons. Without cost you have received; without cost you are to give" (Matthew 10:7–15). The Luminous Mysteries illuminate the public life of this same Jesus — who was baptized in the Jordan, revealed his glory at Cana, proclaimed the Kingdom in word and deed, was transfigured on the mountain, and gave himself entirely in the Eucharist. Everything he did, he gave freely. Everything he asks of us, he first modeled himself. These readings together reveal a God whose love is parental, personal, and completely unearned. He taught Israel to walk. He sent his Son to heal. He sends his disciples out with empty hands because the power was never theirs to begin with — it was always his, given without cost. As we pray the Luminous Mysteries today, we ask for the grace to receive what God gives freely, to go where he sends us without clinging to our own resources, and to trust that the One who raised a people out of Egypt and the dead out of their tombs can accomplish his purposes through us.
