After the A-10 entered service with the US Air Force, it was long regarded as an "ugly duckling," due not only to its limited use but also to its appearance, which earned it the nickname "Warthog." The aircraft was criticized, and the Air Force even considered abandoning it, considering using the F-16 (or rather, its variant, the A-16) for the attack role. In 1990, the US Congress passed a resolution to begin transferring Thunderbolts to the Army, but in November of that year, the Air Force decided to retain two A-10 wings. The A-10's unexpectedly successful use during the Persian Gulf War settled the debate about the aircraft's fate and proved its necessity.
