1182: When the Orthodox Massacred Catholics
In the 1204, Latin Catholic Crusaders infamously sacked Constantinople, terrorizing those inside the city. This event has been studied and discussed innumerable times. In 2004, Pope St. John Paul II apologized in person to the Ecumenical Patriarch. What most are not aware of though, is that only a few short years before, a Latin minority that had been living and working in Constantinople was victim to a wholesale slaughter by the local people being led by their Orthodox priests and monks. April 1182 is a dark day that has been whitewashed from Greek Orthodox history. We tell the story here today.
