Casimir the Restorer returned with a handful of knights to a land that no longer existed and rebuilt Poland from ruins. 📜 IN THIS EPISODE: In the fourth episode of the "Medieval Poland" series, we meet Casimir the Restorer, who raised the Piast dynasty from utter ruin. After the death of Mieszko II, the country was plunged into chaos: a popular uprising and pagan reaction broke out, and the Czech prince Bretislaus sacked Gniezno and took the relics of St. Adalbert. The exile returned with five hundred knights, defeated Miecław in Masovia, reclaimed Silesia, and rebuilt the Church, bringing in the Benedictines. In the background, we see the Ruthenia of Yaroslav the Wise and the Great Schism of 1054. Traces of that world survive in Wawel, Tyniec, and Ostrów Lednicki.
