We follow his severance of tribute with Silesia, his interventions in Ruthenia, and the installation of Izjasław in Kiev, all set against the backdrop of the great world of the era: William the Conqueror's conquest of England, the Byzantine defeat at Manzikert, and the dispute between Pope Gregory VII and King Henry IV, culminating in the scene at Canossa. His coronation in Gniezno in 1076 catapults him to the top, but a conflict with Bishop Stanisław ruins everything. We visit the abbey in Tyniec, where the king may have been laid to rest.
