Arequipa Sanatorium: Life in California's Lung Resort for Women, June 2025
In 1911 physician Philip King Brown opened a remarkable institution in Marin County called the Arequipa Sanatorium, where he treated women with tuberculosis. His son, Dr. Cabot Brown, continued his mission until Arequipa closed in 1957. Lynn Downey’s grandmother was a patient there in the 1920s, and Lynn helped preserve the sanatorium’s records. Through historical documents and interviews with former patients, she published Arequipa Sanatorium: Life in California’s Lung Resort for Women in 2019. Lynn will tell the story of Arequipa’s founders, patients, and place in medical history in her illustrated talk.
