Nobody Realized This Tiny P-38 Upgrade Would Destroy Japanese Air Power In 1943, the Lockheed P-38 Lightning was the United States' most important fighter in the Pacific. Twin engines. Exceptional range. Concentrated nose-mounted firepower. The only aircraft that could escort bombers across the vast distances of the Pacific theater — and the only aircraft that could intercept Yamamoto. It had one problem that was getting pilots killed. At high speed in a dive, the P-38 entered compressibility — an aerodynamic condition where the controls stopped responding and the aircraft pitched progressively nose-down into a dive it couldn't pull out of. Japanese fighter pilots knew this. When a P-38 was on their tail, they pushed the nose down and dove. The American pilot had two choices: break off the pursuit, or follow and risk dying. The engineering fix was a set of small panels on the underside of the wing — dive flaps. Simple in concept. Modest in size. Inexpensive to produce and install. When pilots received them, some couldn't believe something so small would actually work. It worked. It closed the dive escape that Japanese tactics had depended on.
